Loyalty Card Identification: QR, Barcode, or NFC

Choosing the right technology to identify customers at your Point of Sale

At JeriCommerce, we provide multiple ways to identify your customers at the Point of Sale (POS) so they can use their loyalty and coupon cards seamlessly. Choosing the right identifier depends on your current hardware and the speed of service you want to offer.

1. QR Code or Barcode (Standard Setup)

This is the fastest and easiest way to start. It works natively with Shopify POS camera scan and easily integrated with most barcode scanners .

  • Pros: QR has Immediate deployment; no additional hardware or third-party approvals required. Barcode has an easy integration.
  • Requirements: Shopify POS / Integration via Shopify & API to barcode POS system.
  • Activation: 1 day

2. Apple & Google Wallet NFC (Contactless Experience)

NFC technology allows customers to simply "tap" their phone against a reader to identify their loyalty card, without needing to open the Wallet app or wake up their screen.

[!CAUTION]Important: Before activating NFC for your loyalty cards, please review the following requirements.

A. Compatible Hardware (NFC Readers)

Standard credit card terminals usually cannot read loyalty passes via NFC unless specifically configured.

  • NFC identification requires dedicated hardware (Pass Readers) integrated with your POS.
  • JeriCommerce officially supports and integrates with VTAP readers, the industry standard for digital pass interaction.

B. Apple NFC Certificate Approval

To use the NFC chip for loyalty passes on iPhones, Apple requires an explicit approval and a special certificate for your brand. This process involves a manual review by Apple and can take several weeks.

C. Technical Configuration

Activating NFC requires a synchronization between the hardware reader, your Apple/Google developer accounts, and the JeriCommerce platform.
